About the film

PAINTED is rooted in Bradford, exploring the heritage and experiences of the city's Afro-Caribbean community. The film examines identity, racism, and legacy through portrait painting, as four elders from the African Caribbean Wellbeing Café share their stories.

The cast

Headley, June, Juleth, and Vie are voices of Bradford's Windrush legacy, lives that helped shape the city's story. Each answered post-war Britain's call to "come and rebuild the Mother Country," sharing experiences in steel factories, the NHS, and local schools. Their stories speak of hardship and injustice, but also of faith, resilience, and hope for the next generation.

The artist

Portrait artist Jamie Steward, whose work is gaining national recognition, listens as he paints, reflecting on the responsibility of truly seeing someone and capturing more than their image. Through his portraits, Jamie seeks to reveal "the layers of a person," weaving their journeys and experiences into paint and canvas.
